Sunday Walking Market

Tonight Rory and I stumbled upon the Sunday Night Walking Market in Chiang Mai. While the Night Bazaar here sports a variety of knock-off brand name items the Sunday Night Walking Market involves a large number of vendors selling locally made crafts and products, and incredibly inexpensive clothing. I managed to buy 4 new tank tops for less than $10 altogether!

The market stretched from one side of the old city to the other with stalls lining side streets and squares as well. I tried to capture its enormity, but my small point-and-shoot, in addition to my height, made me incapable of doing so.

While walking through one side street we came across the first of many market-style massages. Underneath large a tent top sat a row of reclining chairs, each accompanied by an ottoman and a small chair. Shoppers could stop for a 1/2hr or one hour massage before setting off to roam through more market stalls. We had spent most of the day walking so a massage on-the-go seemed like a brilliant idea. Rory was not so keen.

After bargaining with Rory I've finally convinced him to try his first massage. In return I had to sacrifice a tour of a holy site in Chiang Mai, but considering I was also able to get a massage I wasn't too fused by that compromise. The price of this 1/2 hr foot and lower leg massage - 60 bhat! The equivalent of $2Cdn. I think I'm in heaven.

Rory enjoying this foot massage.

After our massage and a bit more wondering we stopped for dinner. Usually this wouldn't be a notable event, but Rory, once more craving Western cuisine, ordered a bacon burger. The bacon burger came with a bun, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and bacon - sans burger. We had been told by other travelers that when you order a hamburger, instead of just a burger, in Thailand it may be a slice of ham on a burger bun. Considering that warning this order made a bit more sense. I would have been disappointed, but Rory took it in stride and seemed to enjoy dinner.

Beside Rory's dinner is my dinner, Massaman curry. It's a Muslim curry dish with more of an Indian flavour than Thai. Delicious!

Earlier in the day I also stopped for a "fish massage". Tiny fish nibble dead skin off of the soles of your feet. It sounds gross and feels odd, but the result is delightfully smooth.
