Michelle and I headed out to the Koala Sanctuary yesterday afternoon. The sanctuary is a 40 minute bus ride from central Brisbane, and easy to get to once you find the underground bus stations on Queen. That part was not as easy. The sanctuary is located alongside the main river and is home to koalas, kangaroos, dingos, wombats, crocodiles, Tasmanian devils, a variety of native Australian birds, and goats, sheep and two ponies of all things. it only takes about an hour to walk around, but obviously if you're there you want to stop and look at the animals. And they have various shows on such as sheep herding with Australian dogs and feeding times. We didn't have the opportunity to check out any of these shows as we arrived later in the afternoon, but animal watching was more then enough to entertain us. There were also a group of tourists in the kangaroo pen who were feeding an ostrich out of their hands while standing beside the sign that said "Please don't feed the birds". More entertaining was the fact that they seemed to be afraid of the bird but wanted their picture taken feeding it so would hold out a shaky hand for the pic and then scream when it actually pecked at them. Maybe there is a reason you aren't supposed to feed the bird?? hmm....... Anywhoo here are some lovely Lone Pine photos.
