Our first stop was the town of Cervantes. Cervantes is near the Nqmbung Nat P which houses the famous pinnacles. Henrike had heard that the pinnacles are spectacular when viewed at sunrise so we decided to get up early to catch the first rays of light. In our poor planning we forgot to check out when sunrise was and thought 5:30/6am sounded right. I mean if you were the sun, that's when you would want to get up right?? Apparently not. The sun slept in until just before 7am. This gave us plenty of time to explore the park with car headlights though. And we didn't miss one shot of the sun rising! The campsite where were staying in Cervantes offered some photo opportunities of fishing boats itself when the sun went down.
Although not the Karijini Nat Park, Kalburri town and Kalburri National Park allowed for more stunning photo opportunities and a good half day hike. As well as "Nature's Window". One of the things I enjoy most about WA is the red earth. I wish that my camera did a better job of capturing the colour because it is in such extreme contrast with the endless blue skies, blue ocean, white sand, green lakes and the white bark trees.
After Kalburri a mechanical problem meant a 400km detour to the nearest town which had a proper garage. Luckily we didn't have to be towed as they charge by the kilometer for towing in the outback. We were also fortunate in that the problem (a faulty alternator regulator) wasn't overly expensive to fix and the mechanic agreed to check out the car as soon as we arrived.
My favorite beach so far has been shell beach. For those of you who absolutely hate the trail of sand found for days after being to any beach I have found your solution! I beach made of small white shells. Not only do they not get stuck to everything and track into your car, but I've never seen such a white beach! Near shell beach is one of the few remaining stromatolite colonies in the world. These "rocks" are responsible for much of the oxygen that was released into the air before humans even existed. And if you've read "In a Sunburned Country" by Bill Bryson then you know why it's a humourous stopover for those heading north along the coast.
